In easy words, spigot is a customized version of bukkit!

Basically they fixed the performance quite a lot, they made you able to customize more, example you can set the growth rate on wheat, they got a inbuilt orebfuscator that doesn't lag, its not "fully" as good as the orebfuscator plugin but it its really less laggy, basically what it does is changeing ore's that got no air around into stone, the one that got air around will still be shown, but it minimize the xray with about 90% more or less!

They improved quite a lot, i reconmand checking it out and hopefully change to it, user wide it wont effect anything, all plugins will still work its just server side that can get improved, but before changeing i recommand looking into growth rate and mob rate, as by default its a bit low so increasing it a bit is recommanded!

Are the ores without air around them permanently turned into stone, or do they just appear as stone until someone digs out a block next to them? Lots of people strip mine so I wouldn't want to make it pointless.

Tryy, mobs spawn too frequently in my opinion. Anyway, would all the users have to install something to play on the server if we added this?

if you tell swing, he can lower the mob spawning, its quite easy!

And no client don't require any mods or similiar, its basically bukkit, just modificated for better performance and perthcraft already got it now, i helped swing set it up he got some errors but all seems to be working now!

Although this is true, it is buggy with MCMMO super-break. It doesn't usually un-cover the ores if you super-break the blocks around them.
